India celebrates its independence on 15th of August every year and it is a day of great significance for all the countrymen. This day is of great reverence for the people of the country as freedom was attained after a long years of slavery under the British rule and thus it is day to pay homage to all those leaders who sacrificed their lives for India’s Independence. 15th August is an annual gazetted holiday for all the citizens of the country since it is a day of celebration as it reminds every Indian about the onset of new beginnings.
On this day the major government buildings are illuminated and tricolor national flag is hoisted in homes and office in the entire country. On the eve of Independence Day the President of India delivers the “Address to the Nation” and the next day the Prime Minister of the country unfurls the National Flag and holds a speech at the Red Fort in national capital Delhi. The flag hoisting ceremony is accompanied by a grand March Past by the armed forces and paramilitary forces of the country and cultural programmes. Not just the capital city, but the celebration takes place with great enthusiasm in every part of the country – all non-governmental and governmental offices, educational institutions and even the private organizations. In the states with diverse cultural traditions, the Chief Minister hoists the flag and multicultural events are organized.
India’s acquired freedom after a very long struggle of over 200 distressed years and several sacrifices. It was in the year 1857 that the struggle commenced with the sepoy mutiny. Later in the 20th century, Mahatma Gandhi along with the Indian National Congress and other political organizations launched the National Movement encompassing the entire country. On 15th August 1857, at the stroke of midnight, India made a tryst with destiny and the power was transferred from the Britishers to the Constituent Assembly and then was marked a new era of this incredible country.
This year in 2018, India will be celebrating its 72nd Independence and each one is geared up to celebrate the Day. Even the Indian Diaspora all over the world celebrates Independence with same fervour. People spend the day going outdoors like for a picnic or movie as it is a national holiday. Events like kite flying, various competitions by print, communication and online media also take place to leave no stone unturn in commemorating the day.
